April 21, 1836

On April 21, 1836

The Battle of San Jacinto was fought. The Texan army of 910 men under the command of General Sam Houston launched a surprise attack on the Mexican army encamped at San Jacinto. The Texans overwhelmingly defeated the Mexican army of 1,200 men under the Command of General Antonio López de Santa Anna.

With the rally cries of "Remember the Alamo, Remember Goliad!" preceding them, the Texans were able to successfully surprise the Mexicans in a battle that last 18 minutes. While 630 Mexicans died and another 730 captured the Texans lost 39 to death or wounds. The greatest lost to the Mexicans, though did not happen on the day of the battle, rather it was the next day when their President and General Antonio López de Santa Anna was captured while trying to escape to Mexico incognito. Thus ensuring the Texans would have the freedom from Mexico that they so desired.
